I had always wanted to join Running Department’s running sessions but felt too shy to do so. Believe me, I’ve been there, holding myself.
This inertia to join primarily came from two factors,
- I don’t know anyone in the group.
- You look at the Running Department crew and they look like such fast runners, something that intimidated me. The story I always told myself was, ” I can never run like them, so why join them? “
But deep down in my heart I always wanted to run with them and last year I finally gathered the guts to show up with a simple thought in mind, if its too hard, I will never go again.
My experience turned out to be totally the opposite and it felt so good from the onset. I was able to meet fellow runners who were also newbies to the Running Department. There is a constant stream of new people in this community. But the most wonderful thing was that even the crew from the Running Department was so friendly, they initiated the conversation with me and advised a pace group that I should follow. Needless to say, I have not looked back since.
Sometimes we need to loosen ourselves and just show up. I have benefitted a lot from being a part of this community. The group allowed me to build friendship with other runners, gave me confidence to improve my level of performance, push myself and look forward to another great run.
They also give advice and guidance in doing warm ups and cool downs which most of the time we take for granted.
So, I highly encourage everyone to show up once and decide for themselves.
They usually posts their running session in facebook and instagram.
If you still feel shy to show up, you can send them a private message about your interest to join and ask who can they look for during the meet up run. They are responsive and friendly.
Remember running department is not just a running group its a community that welcomes everyone to join. The side effects of joining them include oodles of feel good factor.
